Swiming Pool Weekly Maintenance “To Do” Items…

Here are some items that should be conducted on a weekly basis to properly maintain your swimming pool.  I’ve broke these down in 2 different areas.

1.  Swimming pool maintenance – physical activities.

2.  Weekly swimming pool chemicals to check.

I’ll address the maintenance aspect first – here are 5 things that should be done on a weekly basis (other than the “off season”:

  • Brush tile line/walls of swimming pool.
  • Empty skimmer basket & pump pod basket.
  • Backwash if necessary (hose down cartridge filter if necessary).
  • Vacuum pool (if no automatic cleaner) and hand  remove any large debris (rocks, foreign objects,  etc. – not cleaning any dirt/debris can create the perfect environment for pathogens and bacteria to infest the water).
  • Skim surface of pool.  Remove any debris that  didn’t get trapped by skimmer.

Now that we’ve addressed the swimming pool maintenance side of the equation…let’s chat about the 3 most important pool chemicals to test for on a weekly basis…

  • Free Chlorine
  • Total Alkalinity
  • pH

From testing these 3 items one can get a better picture if there’s something else taking place that needs attention (TDS, phosphates, hardness, etc)…

**  You should also test cyaneric acid (conditioner) 2-3 times per year to ensure your chlorine is being protected from the sun.  Without appropriate cyaneric acid levels you’ll find yourself adding more chlorine than necessary.  Lower cyaneric acid levels reduce the effectiveness and the efficiency of the chlorine.

Hope this brief post finds you well…

All the best,
Terry
