About Fire Your Pool Guy

This website is specifically designed for swimming pool owners that are looking to maintain their own swimming pool or to simply make sure their pool guy/gal is adequately doing their job.  My number one intention here is to provide you with specific, usable information that you can begin applying immediately to save money on repairs, reduce chemical costs and consumption and understand the “tricks of the trade” when it comes to swimming pool maintenance.

Who Am I - What Are My Credentials?

Many people just “assume” that they’re speaking with an expert because someone “says” they are or because they own their own swimming pool and that makes them an expert. I have too much at risk to make unfounded statements. I’ve been published in national newspapers, been on national television and I’ve been in front of hundreds of people at live conferences…teaching others.

I’m not about to jeopardize my integrity or my name over a few bucks. Let me begin by stating that I’ve spent countless years not only studying the molecular composition of water and its volatility under various situations, but I also have years of experience in personally maintaining swimming pools and making sure they were safe to swim in with balanced water and chemical levels that are conducive for a pleasurable experience. I have so many awards, certificates, plaques and “documents” plastered on my wall that I’d have to write a book just to mention each of them. The following points should earn just a bit of your trust:

  • I’ve maintained and been personally responsible for the water quality and maintenance of over 400 swimming pools
  • I’ve been responsible for the water quality and pool equipment for some of the largest commercial properties in the southwest
  • I’ve conducted countless new pool owner orientations for the largest swimming pool builders in the world.
  • I’ve been paid over $32,000.00 to maintain a single swimming pool.

Look, I’m not trying to be arrogant or boastful, but it is important that you know my credentials and why you can trust in the accuracy of the messages you read while on this website.

Have an idea or a recommendation?  I’d love to hear about it and always open to suggestions that can help everyone…let me know by submitting it below.

  1. I recieved your e-mail and I am very happy to hear their are people like yourself trying to help others not get ripped off. Everytime I go to a pool place they try to sell me all the chemicals they can and when I try them I really don’t see much difference.
I have even bought equipment that I have not used but once because I go in with a problem and I am told that this machine will help me. Not really. So I was at first hesitant to check out your website but happy I did. Is there some way I subscribe to your newsletters? And I wanted to know what you think of heaters verses solar energy (and pricing is important) for my pool. I am in Chicago and there are some years we hardly use the pool because it might be warm outside but the water is too cool for the kids. I appreciate your help in this matter.

  2. Thank you Betsy for the kind words and the feedback. I believe that you are on the subscriber list - if not, please visit: http://www.fireyourpoolguy.com/youneedthis.php.

I’m a big fan of solar equipment - there have been vast improvements with this new technology over recent years and typically the invstment is recouped within 4-5 years. And there are A LOT fewer things that can go wrong compared to traditional heaters.

    All the best,

    Terry

  3. Terry, I bought your “Professional Grade” guide and am learning alot!
I have a problem that is not addressed in your book. Green Hair. How do I prevent peoples hair from turning green after swimming in our pool. It’s mostly the blonds, but I’d like to remedy the problem. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

  4. I am wondering how long I should run my pool in the winter — I live in Austin TX. It does have a freeze function that turns on the pump should the temps get to 32 or below so that is not a factor. Also the best time of day to run it .

  5. Hi Linda,

During the winter months you can scale things back a bit…4-5 hours is plenty of movement per 24 hour period (assuming the pool is less than 15k gallons).

The best time to run equipment is during the day, however, economically, it makes sense to do run it during “off peak” hours based upon your utility plan - usually this is in the evenings after 9 PM or so.

    Hope this helps.
    :)

  6. Great blog, keeping me from working
